Night Photography – Light Painting

Harvey Milk Photo Center Winter 2017 Term

Night Photography – Light Painting

Building upon groundwork covered in our Introduction to Night Photography course, here we focus on some of the more creative aspects of Night Photography – Light Painting, with flashlights, strobes, and other electroluminescent devices. In addition to traditional “light painting” techniques, where, unseen to the camera, the light source is used to illuminate an object in the scene (or the scene itself!), we also include “light drawing” – where the light IS the subject. Various lighting devices and resources are compared. An illustrative history of photographers who utilized light painting techniques, as well as examples of current practitioners of light painting, will provide plenty of insight and inspiration for our fieldwork.
