Crossing Plains

Crossing Plains was born from the aerial perspective while flying commercial coast-to-coast. During a year of frequent travel Spencer Brown photographed the land between the Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains on over a dozen flights. Aerial locations were later visited by rental car on two extended road trips across Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.

Photos taken from above were chosen for their compositions, and the luck of clean plane windows and a clear day. Ground photos were constrained to the compositions made overhead and located through good notes, flight paths, and many, many hours on Google maps.

People living on the coasts often call the Midwest ‘Fly Over Country’, dismissing the entire heartland as not worth the visit. Crossing Plains connects the beauty above to the same landscape below.
