2019 Eyes on the City
Featuring USF Students
This exhibit is the result of a three-year collaboration between the University of San Francisco and the Harvey Milk Photo Center. Students from two classes at USF (Photo Praxis and the City and Fotografía y Ficción) photographed a variety of themes for their final projects: street photographs; architectural explorations of the city; cultural artifacts from the Latino community in the Bay Area, graceful shots of signs in San Francisco’s Mission District, candid shots of construction workers and sensitive portraits of Latinos in San Francisco, among others. Students participated in Chris Gould’s excellent Dark Room Printing workshop and profited from Keelan Sullivan’s technical assistance at the Harvey Milk Photo Center. Without disqualifying the merits of digital photography, this experience sought to connect these young photographers—in an age ruled by immediate gratification–with the more meditative and deliberate way of seeing inherent to analog photography.
